Sarah (a portrait of the artist’s wife with a hat)

author

William Patrick Roberts

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Edinburgh National Gallery (Scotland).

The artist painted his wife for almost 60 years of their married life dozens of times, dressing her as a gipsy or Algerian. He created this almost monumental portrait of beautiful Sarah with a hat in the early years of their marriage (they married in 1922). Nee Kramer was a sister of Slade, a fellow student of William, and was a model for her brother when she met Roberts. This image is ascetic: a simple dress, even background and no additional “embellishments”. The artist conveyed the strength of her character, expressed by her bright look from beneath the vast and bent up fields of the headgear.
