Rendezvous in German

author

Nikos Engonopoulos

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: private collection.

Surviving participation in hostilities and German captivity, the artist repeatedly created paintings that reflect the history of his time. Nikos denoted the scene by the image of the acropolis in the background of the picture. The German soldier represents death and therefore is depicted as a skeleton figure in polished boots and an iron helmet holding a weapon with a bayonet. The lady, who apparently needs to go through the checkpoint, turns her face away from him. The confrontation between peaceful and violent is even more impressive because the scene unfolds against the background of a cloudless southern sky.
