Red Square UNOVIS

author

Ilya Chashnik

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: private collection.

The composition consisting of two main figures – a large black triangle, crossed out with two lines, and a small uneven square at its top, has many interpretations. For example, a triangle, apex downward – a symbol of all feminine, can mean romantic love, and also was referred to supernatural power, used in black magic. It is interesting that bibliophile and collector Pavel Gubar used the painting of Chashnikov’s as ex-libris, while contemporary popular actor Johnny Depp made it one of his tattoos. In both cases, the product of the Suprematist was used upside down. The copy of the painting by its author is exhibited horizontally at the New York Museum of Modern Art.
