On Time Off Time

author

Dorothea Tanning

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Museum of Modern Art, New York (the USA).

This small canvas offers a plot with an apparent closeness to surrealistic themes and a variety of symbols characteristic of the artist. Among them, there is a big sunflower – a plant from her childhood. In this composition, the author still uses dreams, but the eyes of the character are not simply closed – there is a white bandage on them. The house (perhaps it’s a window frame) is shown in section, and objects (a large animal cloud with one eye, like a cyclop; a tree that looks like a fire, etc.) are allowed to ignore its walls and ceiling, to freely enter the space.
