description

Mediums: vacuum cleaners, plexiglass and fluorescent lamps.
Location: the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the USA.

The installation consists of several ordinary vacuum cleaners placed under glass and illuminated by bright fluorescent lamps. According to the artist, a vacuum cleaner is a totemic image that embodies the masculine and feminine principles – the universality that the consumer society promotes. The author does not condemn and does not admire this state of things but only demonstrates with his work the paradox and false ideals of modernity. Jeff Koons was inspired by the “finished things” by Marcel Duchamp; however, he used new items that bought specifically for this.
