Motherland is calling

author

Yevgeny Vuchetich

description

Mediums: reinforced concrete, steel, metal cables.
Located on the Mamaev Kurgan in Volgograd (Russia).

The scope of this work significantly exceeds the previous works of the author. It was included in the Guinness Book of Records, as the largest statue at that time – the height of the figure with the sword is 85 m. The similarity of the composition of the work to the antique “Nika Samofrakiyskaya” was repeatedly noted (striving forward, wind elasticity, torso turn), as well as to the Paris Marseillaise due to the expression of the draft. The sculptor probably made the original figure from N. Dumbadze’s disks, and the monument’s face resembles the features of his wife Vera. There is a version that this sculpture is part of a triptych. The first of them is “Rear to the Front” by sculptor L. Golovnitsky, where the sword is forged; the second one is the Motherland raising a sword to the enemy; the third one is “The Liberator Warrior”, where the sword was put down after the victory in Berlin.
