Memories from childhood. Butterfly

author

Esteban Francés

description

Mediums: gouache, color pencils, collage, cardboard.
Location: The National Museum of Reina Sofia (Madrid, Spain).

After a long break in creative activity, the artist returned to painting only in the early 1970s. Moving away from surrealism, he began to work in a completely different style, combining pencil drawing, gouache and a collage. The painting “Butterfly” is one of the series “Recollections from childhood”, in which Frances reflected the ideas and dreams of his early years. The artist showed the child’s image as a bright red clearly outlined silhouette against a blue sky; the butterfly, which he catches with a butterfly net, represents a winged woman in a swimsuit. Despite the apparent appeal of the plot, the picture causes a feeling of strange anxiety.
