description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: private collection.

This is the artist’s pre-futuristic work indicating his interest in the possibilities of transferring the energy of motion and light in painting. The canvas is one of three such works named “Lightings”, two of which are made entirely in the pointillist style, and are stored in the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome. The canvas can be conditionally divided into two parts; the upper one depicting a night sky pierced by lightning is masterfully made in the technique of divisionism, while the lower one reflects the rapid movement of the train in a bright futuristic manner. In several of his later works, the author used the technique of surprisingly plausible depiction of speed with the help of red light diverging to the sides.
