Leaving the Theater

author

Carlo Carrà

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Gallery of Italian Contemporary Art (London, the UK).

In the work of Carra, the densely populated metropolis turning people into a kind of ghosts and an illusion that is ready to dissolve and disappear at any moment in space are again in the spotlight. Flowing lines and silhouettes moving in different directions form a sharp dynamics of imbalance, instilling instability and emotional tension. In the painting, we can notice the echo of the artist’s enthusiasm for the technique of pointillism. Separate strokes of bright colour create a peculiar optical effect that makes the canvas shimmer and vibrate like music.
