One of Chagall’s first “fly-away” paintings and a business card of his personality was created in Vitebsk. It not only expresses the utmost happiness of the Artist and his Muse, but also the author’s dream to “fly away” from all the revolutions to adored Bohemian Paris. The painter subtly conveyed the nuances of the relationship: the figure of a man is painted in a cubist manner, while the harmoniously graceful woman is depicted in smooth lines. Moreover, they are in spiritual-plastic unity, which is emphasized by colours. Below them is a provincial town with its inhabitants engaged in everyday activities, with its gray fences and a white temple.
