Family Dinner

author

Ángeles Santos Torroella

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The National Museum of Fine Arts. Reina Sofia, Madrid (Spain).

Briefly about the painting:

The success of the painting “The World”, which gave A. Santos contacts with the poets and artists of Madrid, also had negative consequences – it made her artistic activities almost feverish. At the same time, her conflict with society and even with her family aggravated. Wishing to know and apply new avant-garde trends, she came up against the daily experience of the secluded environment of the provincial town. The members of the family having supper are represented as hungry animals. Even the mother – in fact, an elegant lady who played the piano, becomes a monster and eats a whole potato with her hands, and one of her daughters mimics her like a monkey. Critics believe the obvious influence of “black” paintings by Francis Goya and cartoons of C. del Sordo.
