Exorcism

description

Mediums: ink, gouache, wash, resin, paper.
Location: The Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (the USA).

The artist depicted a procession conducting a complex and ancient rite. A priest, easily recognizable due to his high tiara, conducts it; however, it is unclear whether he is heading a crowd going somewhere, or stopping it with a decisive hand gesture. Such doubleness appeared because of two recognizable faces of the main hero (or a face and a mask). Call for demons or other subtle essences to leave the bodies of the affected ones meets resistance – it is expressed in complex positions of figures and half-figures. As it is usually seen in Kurt Seligmann’s paintings, little free background remains in the composition.
