The Balcony I

author

Kurt Seligmann

description

Mediums: oil, watercolor, ink, canvas.
Location: The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (the USA).

Expressive characters on the balcony resemble surrealistic marionettes. Despite the statics of the image itself, each of the four figures is emotional in its own way, especially the standing one (obviously, this is a lady), wrapped in fluffy draperies. Two figures at the left side are actively talking. For the characters, the artist chose rather dark colors, so on a neutral gray-pink background, all the intricate details of their clothes and hats are distinct up to their relief. With great care, the master painted the massive balcony railing.
