The painting portrays the state of Europe after the war. Ruins are very similar to dead bodies. Emotional desolation is mixed with fear toward the destructive power of the war. Ernst used a collage technique called decalcomania. Gouache was pressed onto a canvas using paper, which produced a multilayered effect.
