Embryology

author

Magdalena Abakanowicz

description

Mediums: burlap, hemp, sisal, nylon.
Location: The Tate Gallery, London (the UK).

The objects of the series “Organic Structures” in the amount of 200 pieces were placed randomly at the Venice Biennale of 1980. They were more vivid than the abakans because they were filled with soft material. According to the author’s comment, in this way, she depicted memories from a tragic childhood when she had to endure the occupation and see the loss of life. Abakanowicz handmade embryos are rounded irregular shapes of different sizes – from 4 to 250 cm in diameter. The name and form are associated with embryonic life forms, not ready to leave cocoons and begin independent existence. Subsequently, their number increased to 800.
