Abakan grand noir

author

Magdalena Abakanowicz

description

Mediums: sisal, hemp.
Location: The Museum of Modern Art, Center of G. Pompidou, Paris (France).

The work is one of those monumental three-dimensional forms, which Abakanowicz made of flexible and freely transformable natural fibers. This revolutionary technology shows the artist’s obsession with organic life and her interest in the plastic properties of soft materials in space. The artist was looking for freedom of gestures, which censored academic studies. Unlike works of minimal art, using industrial materials and woven volumes, Abakanowicz revealed their essence slowly. The viewer is invited to penetrate the incisions, folds and sides of the unusual sculpture.
