Eight bells folly: Memorial to Hart Crane

author

Marsden Hartley

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.

When modernist poet Hart Crane committed suicide, Hartley depicted him. In this frightening picture, we see a ship and the sea in which the poet died. Two arcs symbolize the subject of Crane’s great poem, “The Bridge” (1930).
