The plot painting depicts a moonlit summer night in a Ukrainian village – such attributes as sunflowers and flowering chestnuts, domra in the hands of a gentleman and a wattle leave no doubt about this. The clear radiance of the night light is transmitted through colours – the large figures of the characters are completely blue, all volumes are modulated by the shades of this colour, as well as white-transparent highlights, purple shadows. The fact that this is a pair of lovers is indicated by the same blue and white heart pierced by an arrow that hung in the air between them. A disproportionately small joyfully jumping dog is depicted by a white outline. The image of the village is collective, and the mood is lyrical and somewhat mysterious.
