In the 1950s, Delvaux turned to religious themes, depicting classic biblical scenes in a completely innovative way. The main feature of these works is the presence of skeletons that perform human roles and symbolise the heroes of the New Testament. This interpretation caused a mixed reaction from the audience, and the leadership of the Catholic Church accused the artist of blasphemy, and his paintings were prohibited from displaying. Nevertheless, these works demonstrate the originality of the artist’s vision and are very important.
