The composition of the painting reveals the artist’s unusual approach to the depiction of the naked human body and his interest in ancient mythology. The silver-pink mermaid reclining in the middle of the city seems to bask in the rays of moonlight, which plays on the scales of its tail and rich ornaments. The combination of the rational order of a linear perspective and an incredible scene in which a mythical creature feels completely free in a human settlement is puzzling. Despite the absence of any action, there is a sense of mystery and danger, hiding behind the indifferent languid look of the siren.
