author

Alexander Calder

description

Mediums: brass, copper wire.
Location: the National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC, the USA).

Alexander Calder created figures of wire since childhood; probably, he did it because his father used wireframes to support works. In his “drawings” of thin wire, he managed to achieve what was not in the standard sculpture – lightness, airiness, mobility of elements. The small figurine of a cow impresses you with its laconicism and simplicity, as well as the special sophistication and sense of humor of its author. This approach to the art of sculpture was a real breakthrough for the contemporaries of the artist, who turned the very concept of this type of art upside down.
