Colour Rhythms

author

Aleksandra Ekster

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: Ludwig Museum, Cologne (Germany).

This painting is of the period when the artist came to the principle opposite to the absolute autonomy of non-figurative elements, declared by Suprematism. Pondering on the colour energy, Ekster created compositional schemes of closely interacting colour plans. Each element fits into the fabric of the created composition with its colour and “moves on it”. In “Colour Rhythms”, it is easy to trace the flow of yellow geometric shapes: starting from the right corner, they diagonally expand their presence and, reaching the top, set the rhythm of the whole composition.
