Car speed and sound

author

Giacomo Balla

description

Mediums: oil, cardboard.
Location: the collection of Peggy Guggenheim, Venice (Italy).

One of the many paintings by the artist dedicated to the rapid movement of the car. Like all Futurists, Balla was inspired by the achievements of technology; he was attracted by the limitless possibilities of industrialization, where a person can control speed and complex mechanisms. The picture evokes the feeling of a fast-moving car, demonstrates not only its speed but also its sound depicted in the form of intersecting lines. In the same period, the author created two more similar paintings with a red racecar against the background of the same landscape: “Abstract Speed” and “Passing Car”. These paintings are a vivid example of the so-called “torn movement” and are considered a classic image of futuristic painting.
