Brittany legend. Monk Christopher with Christ near the river

author

Yury Annenkov

description

Mediums: organic paints, board.
Location: private collection.

This painting was created in a peculiar Annenkov style, when the cubistic crystallinity of water, the brittle lines of the hills and the geometry of volumes in the silhouette ovals of figures and in architecture are combined. Just like many avant-garde artists, the painter was interested in archaic with its primary simplicity and naive fantasticality. Having been in Brittany that was not affected by urbanism, he probably heard a legend that became the basis of the plot picture: St. Christopher carried the little Christ through a stormy stream. Interestingly, the work was created on the board, as did the painters of antiquity, who did not use canvases.
