Dimensions: 54 x 43,8 сm.
Location: Städelsches Kunstinstitut und Städtische Galerie, Frankfurt.

This painting carries the same name as a novella by Theodor Storm. This is one of the earliest works by Ernst. A pool is surrounded by buildings. The person in the pool appears to be diving or is drowning. A gray figure stands by near the water. It is difficult to tell whether this is a man or a woman. The sky seems not to be real, as there is a clock instead of a moon.
