After Olympia

author

Anthony Caro

description

Mediums: patinated and varnished steel.
Location: Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, the USA).

The sculptor created this work under the impression from a trip to Greece in 1985, where he was inspired by the pediment of the temple of Zeus in Olympia. The large-scale sculpture 25 meters long completely repeats the size and shape of this pediment and is an abstract interpretation of the antique plot. Like in all his later works, the artist did not use paint, as he did in the past. Caro used the metal in its natural form, with traces of rust and the welding machine, covering the surface with a thin layer of patina to avoid its further destruction.
