A Human Son

author

Sergey Konenkov

description

Mediums: tinted gypsum..
Location: the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg (Russia).

The artist who was brought up in a deeply religious family and received the first lessons from his father, an icon painter, adhered to leftist views. However, in America, he joined a religious community and even wrote letters to Stalin of a prophetic nature on behalf of Jehovah’s Witnesses (three such appeals were published). The sculptor addressed the image of Christ repeatedly; he also created the famous statue “The Prophet” and a large series of drawings on biblical themes. The refined face of the Human Son amazes the viewer with the deep sadness, wisdom and humility of a man who knows about his tragic fate.
