Seaport

Edward Wadsworth

description

Mediums: tempera, canvas.
Location: The Tate Modern Gallery, London (the UK).

In the early 1920s, the artist developed a new painting technique: using tempera, which requires quick and accurate processing, he decided to create a series of scenes similar to the engravings of W. Turner from the series “The Harbors of England”. The seaport was painted using sketches made in France. Wadsworth combined realistic details with a general atmosphere that matches the pervasive mood of anxiety and the need for change. Particularly alarming is the absence of people and any movement in general.
