description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg (Russia).

The plot picture is essentially the master’s self-portrait with his wife. Following his already fully formed manner, the painter used two main “views” – frontal and top view. In both cases, the artist received a planar image, similar to the application: there is no hint of shadow on a neutral gray-green background. A large oval table, covered with a white tablecloth, occupies most of the picture and loudly contrasts with the black suit of the man and the dark blue dress of the woman. Accent spots, cherries on a simple white dish, an apple, and a rosy loaf of bread, do not violate the narrative of the plot.
