This is a painting from the series “Seasons” dedicated to birth, adulthood, maturity and wilting. Even though Jasper Johns always avoided mirroring his personality in his works, this painting can be called autobiographical. Each detail depicted on the canvas refers to some earlier work of the artist or the whole period of his creative career. For example, the outstretched hand resembles the picture “Periscope”, and the insert of shaded elements is a recollection of Jones’ work in graphics in the 1970s. Two grey male figures on both sides of the canvas may symbolize the artist’s long-lasting and productive relationship with Rauschenberg, although, according to art critics, this cannot be stated unequivocally.
