Paul Serusier

description

A French artist, one of the founders and theoreticians of the Nabis group (from Hebrew “The Prophets”).
Paul’s father was the owner of a perfume factory and dreamed of making his son a merchant. However, at school young Serusier showed a penchant for fine arts and languages.
A disciple and a faithful follower of Paul Gauguin. It was Serusier who introduced the work of the outstanding painter to his friends at the Academy of Art who adopted and applied new artistic principles in their work. In addition to paintings and graphics, Serusier created several theoretical works. One of them is “The ABC of Painting”, where the artist presented his understanding of the basics of painting.

Key ideas:

– The work of Paul Seriusier, which at the very beginning strongly resembled the works of his teacher and idol Paul Gauguin, very quickly acquired its own original features. Having rethought the basic ideas of Cloisonnism, that is, creating individual colorful planes in the painting, and applying them in his works in his own way, the artist puts an additional meaning and profound content in the paintings.

– The canvases of the painter are intellectual. They make the viewer contemplate, giving a variety of historical and artistic associations. This is very clearly expressed in the work “Pont-Avent triptych”, where the heroines of the plot personify certain mythological images and are the symbols of human existence. Over time, the influence of Catholicism reinforced in Serusier’s artistic method. The artist tries to unite the Symbolist theories with religious ideas, and this is reflected in the themes on the murals of the church in Châteauneuf-du-Faou.

– The art of Paul Serusier is synthetic to the greatest extent. It miraculously combines the simplicity of artistic means with the amazing depth of design and the authenticity of the impression. The artist said, “Syntheses means the reduction of the variety of forms to the smallest number that we can only perceive: to straight lines, to several angles, to arcs of circles and ellipses. Going beyond such limits, we will be lost in the ocean of diversity.”
