Constantin Brâncuşi

description

Mediums: stone.
Location: The Craiova Art Museum (Romania).

With this work, Brancusi established his artistic autonomy. The technique, which the author called the direct cutting method, led to the rejection of conventional modelling in favour of archaic sculpting methods. The motive of the “Kiss” is a man and a woman, truncated to half the body and tied in one block, with their geometrical hands encircling this almost unprocessed block. This technique is close to the picturesque techniques of cubism, which Brancusi preferred, and shows a new plastic reality. At the same time, a clear image becomes a symbol that is both primitive and super-modern. Brancusi created several such figures, slightly varying the main lines. The copy made in 1923 is located in the Center of G. Pompidou.
