Pieta

author

Ernst Barlach

description

Mediums: bronze.
Location: The house-museum of E. Barlach, Hamburg (Germany).

The Orthodox were outraged by the new work of Barlach, who was already famous throughout the world. Christ is a soldier in a helmet, and even petrified, small, like a toy, that is, a generalized infantryman from the recent war. The work has no empathic female essence – there is only a statement of what is happening. It is noteworthy that female images were often very exalted in works of Expressionists; Ernst Barlach, on the contrary, simplified the character’s appearance. Therefore, in “Pieta”, you can see the image of the foremother, as in his work “Mother Earth”.
