Fragment of the torso

author

Constantin Brâncuşi

description

Mediums: stone.
Location: The Craiova Art Museum (Romania).

Art critics note the perfect combination of the purity of the line, the perfection of the form with the sensuality inherent in a seemingly small fragment of the female body. The marble sculpture was successfully exhibited first at the Paris Salon; in 1912, it was shown at the official salon in Bucharest, the jury of which awarded the artist the Grand Prix. Speaking against O. Rodin, whose painful self-expression did not correspond to the nature of his talent, Brancusi, nevertheless, did not refuse to use fragmentation of the image – on the contrary, he elevated the art of the fragment to the height of the manifesto.
