Like most of the artist’s works, this one is distinguished by its external simplicity and deep internal content. The man in the bowler, familiar from Magritte’s previous pictures, is depicted in close-up in a rather realistic manner. Attention is immediately drawn to the apple that obscures the man’s face, which suddenly appeared in the air and causes a desire to see what is behind it. The painting very clearly demonstrates the main idea of ​​the artist’s work – the visible object always obscures the real things hidden behind the demonstrative barrier or artificially created mask. The painter created several more similar works in which a person’s face is covered by a flying white dove or a bouquet.
