description

The platforms are covered with a structure made of reinforced concrete beams with a diamond-shaped section. Above the platforms rises a symmetrical bird-like structure of powerful steel shell wings, which rest on steel arches on supports. The expressive form, which hypnotizes by the refinement of the pulsating “exoskeletons”, playing on the bodily relationship with other life forms, has many symbolic meanings. The central pair of arches extend the centerline of the roof to form the base, leaving outer curves encompassing the two symmetrical side wings of the crystal beams. An adjacent pair of beams soar 120 feet above the station’s tallest glass lobby. These ribs rise up on the north and south facades.

The cast-on-site concrete roof deck supports and visually complements the same modules in the main terminal area. The concrete has a natural color thanks to the use of a white sandy area. The steel parts that are part of the cover have a dark tint, which is unusual in Calatrava’s work. The glass walls that form the lobby are formed by panels eight feet wide. The roof is glazed in some sections, while others are filled with precast concrete sections.
