Bourdelle depicted his teacher, employer and colleague twice. The totemic portrait bust, as well as the final figure of the working master, puzzled critics of Roden’s faunal image. Bourdelle emphasized the power of the character and the impression that he was closely connected with higher powers. Focusing on the distinguishing features of the model, Bourdelle again applied the lessons learned from Rodin and created a real icon of the creator, dictated by the feelings of great admiration for the master, with whom he worked in the same studio for 15 years. The sculpture was donated by the author to the Rodin Museum.
