King Solomon

author

Alexander Archipenko

description

Mediums: bronze.
Location: Campus in Pennsylvania (USA).

This was the last sculpture made by the Ukrainian artist and the only one that he conceived as monumental. He used abstract forms: the high battlements are associated with the crown, and intersecting triangles represent the old costume of the king. Arkhipenko wanted the sculpture to be more than 18 meters (60 feet) high, which would emphasize the dramatic feeling that he put into the image. Even of this size, the sculpture is the piece de resistance of the University of Penn’s outdoor sculpture collection.
