In the 1950s, Henry Moore created a series of pictures of women in draperies. The artist became interested in clothing that hides some parts of the human body and emphasizes its shape after visiting Greece, where he had an opportunity to study ancient statues. Moore began experimenting with draperies while working on a sculpture for the new UNESCO headquarters building in Paris but chose to focus on a more abstract work. The numerous remaining sketches and plaster models served as the basis for the creation of several sculptures, which are reclining or seated women, shrouded in thin, flowing fabrics.
