Day and night

author

Antoine Bourdelle

description

Mediums: marble.
Location: Musée Bourdelle, Paris (France).

Bourdelle created this plot bust during the period of his fascination with the work of the Impressionists and, in particular, sculptures by O. Rodin. The narrative is based on contrast: a well-designed and smoothly polished day in the guise of a man and a dimly readable night, whose appearance is anthropomorphic. Judging by the large rather rough features of the face and the powerful hand lying on the shoulder of the first figure, this is also a man. The author demonstrated his attempts to combine the modern language of plastic art with samples of classical sculpture, and used the ideas of symbolism in the content. The following year, dividing a pair of busts, Bourdelle created a fantastic sculpture called “Night”.
