Crystal Cathedral

author

Philip Johnson

description

Striving for sculpture was one of the goals of the architect. Even Johnson’s glass volumes are monumental. For example, in the construction of the Protestant megachurch in Gardengrove, California, more than 10,000 rectangular glass blocks were used. The Crystal Cathedral can accommodate up to 3000 parishioners. The name itself refers more to the size and type of the building, but this does not mean that it is a cathedral in the traditional sense.
