A roofless church

author

Philip Johnson

description

The church is a vast rectangular open-air hall, enclosed on all sides by a blank brick wall. In the center above the sculpture of Jacob is an unusual dome made of plywood and covered with wooden shingles. This building immediately made a huge impression on critics, who compared it with the wooden pagan structures, the wooden churches of northern Europe, then with the curvilinear Baroque forms of Borromini.
