2007
The installation is in the form of a world map and is made of 2000 garments arranged in layers. The height of each mainland from the floor is 1.2 m. The material is neatly carved and stacked by Chinese workers, whom Ai Weiwei specially hired to make the installation. With this work, the artist wanted to show that China has such a large labour force that it produces most of the clothes worldwide, and that, unfortunately, a simple Chinese worker receives a mere penny for his work.
