Serpentine ceiling

Ai Weiwei

description

Installation from school backpacks.
Location: the Mori Museum of Art (Tokyo, Japan).

The artist put several hundred school bags together in the form of a long ribbon and hung it on the ceiling, folding it in rings, like snakes. The installation is dedicated to children who died during the terrible earthquake in Sichuan in 2008. As a result of the disaster, many children died, since during the construction of schools thefts were allowed, and the buildings were not reliable. The information about the number of deaths was carefully hidden by officials. After Ai Weiwei attempted an independent investigation and published the death tolls on his blog, he was brutally beaten by the police.
