Women of Dresden

author

Georg Baselitz

description

Mediums: wood, tempera.
Location: The State Art Collections of Dresden (Germany).

The wooden sculpture painted in a bright yellow colour is dedicated to the events of World War II, namely the destruction of Dresden at the very end of the armed conflict. According to childhood memoirs of Georg Baselitz, who witnessed the tragedy, German women rebuilt the city literally from debris and ruins. The artist cut out rough features of women from a single piece of wood with a chainsaw, without smoothing sharp corners and polishing the surface. This deliberate negligence together with a pulsating yellow colour makes up a high emotional intensity of the work.
