Caro made his early sculpture mainly from clay and cast in bronze. These were figurative compositions depicting people and having signs of expressionism. The work “Woman Waking Up” is a lying naked woman whose body is depicted in a very sketchy, even rude manner, and it is not attractive. Experimenting with the shape of objects and techniques, Anthony Caro deliberately left the sculpture as if unfinished, with a poorly designed surface and angular shapes, demonstrating his penchant for abstract forms.
