Woman on the Balcony

author

Carlo Carrà

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: private collection.

The main idea of this painting, like many other works of the artist is his desire to express movement. Here Carra tried to express it by the method of analytical cubism – by decomposing an object into separate components. The central part of the plot – a woman hanging clothes – is fixed simultaneously in several phases of her movement, and the viewer can imagine the full picture of her movements on the balcony. Compared to the artist’s earlier works, the dynamics of the painting are quite calm, and the colour scheme varies within several colours and their unsaturated shades.
