description

The Tate Gallery, London (the UK).

Acrylic paint on the wall.

The Mural # 1136 is a bright, cheerful painting abstractly. This is a curve consisting of strips of different colours that make it similar to a tape. The background on which the artist placed this “rainbow” also consists of coloured stripes, without any space on the wall. As in all of his wall paintings, Sol Lewitt did not do the work on his own. He hired workers for this; they transferred his sketch to the wall, having enlarged it. Giving the right to perform drawings to other people, the artist minimized his influence on the work of art; this was an important aspect of his work.
