View of Cassis

author

Roger Eliot Fry

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Musee d’Orsay, Paris (France).

A small town in the south of France attracted Roger Fry with the view of textured rocks when the low sun lighted them. The painting contains the artist’s favourite motif of a road running around a bend. The ascetic architecture of Cassis fits perfectly into the background consisting of the surrounding mountains, and the hollow harmony of the composition is given by shadows falling on a high fence along the road and matching with alpine rocks in colour. The whole world breathes solidity and peace under the high blue sky without a single cloud.
