The work depicting the houses of the Indians was created at Colville Reservation, where Clyfford Still and his associates founded a colony of artists in 1937. The artist’s early paintings were based on the style of American regionalism, so the work is distinguished by a dark colour scheme and a simple everyday plot. The features of the future style of the founder of Abstract Expressionism can be guessed in how he worked with the plane and applied paints on large areas. The influence of Paul Cezanne is also noticeable in the picture – this can be seen in the work in simplified forms and the depiction of objects from several angles simultaneously.
